The best decisions are informed by the best available data. But arriving at these decisions requires a process or framework. One such process, known as SBAR (Subject, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation), has proven to be of value in the healthcare arena.
Subject: The manner in which an organization determines which therapies and technologies to consider.
Background: Establishing a clear, evidence-based understanding of the universe of therapies and devices being considered.
Assessment: Narrowing the organizational perspective, resulting in a recommendation to engage with a specific supplier.
Recommendation: Making a detailed recommendation to senior leadership.
With structured, collaborative, evidence-driven value analysis processes in place, health systems can better determine when, why, and for whom the technology or procedure being considered will be used. Patient care has replaced cost in the decision-making process.
