Adding a new drug to your hospital’s formulary is complicated and time-consuming. A Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee determines which drugs and related products to include in the formulary—a continually updated list of medications and related products supported by current evidence-based medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The primary purpose of the formulary is to encourage the use of safe, effective, and affordable medications.

Every P&T Committee decision-making process is based on system-wide best practices and applicable regulations. Healthcare organizations must follow these regulations and requirements, which vary by state.

Pharmacy decision-making is typically a manual process that produces binders full of reports and other paperwork. Locating paper documents for assessment purposes and to report on historical decisions is time-consuming.

To facilitate compliant, efficient decision-making, P&T Committees need to standardize their processes, organize and track their progress, and store documents in a central repository. Virtual decision-making capabilities are essential when some staff may be working remotely, and in-person meetings are inconvenient and impractical.

Standardize and simplify pharmacy decision-making by following these six steps:

Automate and customize the intake/request process. Clinicians should be able to submit pharmacy requests electronically. Create custom eForms to collect required information for different request types that can be customized to fit your process (e.g., Use Setting, Drug Classification and Category). State and hospital requirements can be built into the intake form. If clinical evidence is required, the clinician/requestor can be required to provide that evidence when making the request. This prevents decision-makers from wasting time evaluating a drug that lacks the necessary clinical evidence.

Route the request to the right people. The request will be automatically sent to the reviewer, who decides whether to return the request to the requestor for additional information or push it through to the appropriate team members for continued evaluation.

Gather and organize assessment data efficiently. Make sure that critical information and documentation are reviewed and other best practice tasks and regulatory steps are completed prior to making a decision. Your P&T committee needs to collect and review some or all of this information about the requested drug or product:

  • Clinical evidence, including clinical trials and treatment guidelines, comparative effectiveness reports, and outcomes data.
  • FDA-approved prescribing information and safety data.
  • Current therapeutic use and access guidelines and the need for revised or new guidelines.
  • Drug and other healthcare cost data.
  • Healthcare provider recommendations.

Store this information in a central, electronic repository so reviewers have ready access to it and you can easily refer back to it when someone asks why a particular decision was made.

Enable virtual decision-making. Before, during, or after your in-person or virtual meetings, launch electronic voting and custom surveys from right within the drug review to easily gather key decision-maker feedback.
